Agriculture Profile
Agriculture is the principal occupation of the people of this district. The cultivation process adopted is primitive and at subsistence level which is popularly known as ‘JHUM’ or shifting cultivation is insufficient and provides food for approximately 6 to 7 months. Paddy, Maize and Millet are importance crops grown in this district. ‘RANGBANG’ is also commonly used as diet by puroik tribes which inhabits predominantly in Chayangtajo, Sawa and Khenewa circles.
To augment the food production, the Agriculture department and CD/IRD blocks at Seppa, Chayangtajo, Bameng and Pakke-Kessang started Agricultural schemes with introduction of permanent cultivation. The Agriculture department and CD blocks provides plough bullocks to the improved cultivators through various schemes, like subsides schemes, IRD Bank Loan schemes etc. improved seeds, fertilizers, improved tools implement and plant protection chemical, equipment to the cultivators on subsidy basis to increased crop yield. Irrigation is also providing to the field through channel.

FISHERIES
The Fishery activities though started from 1965-66 under agriculture department, but gain its momentum from November 1980 when the Department was started functioning independently. At present the Fishery development activities of the district is headed by District Fishery Development Officer (Originally Superintendent of Fisheries ) with a very few subordinate staffs.
Different development activities through implementing schemes in East Kameng District during 2002-2003.
- Rural Aquaculture - Construction of new ponds: This is a beneficiaries oriented scheme. 25% assistant @ Rs. 3.0 Lakh/Ha is giving to the beneficiaries for construction of fish pond and 25% for the inputs @ Rs. 30,000/- per ha of water area. During 2002-03 0.5 Ha of area develop under this scheme, allotted 5 Nos. of selected beneficiaries of this district @ Rs. 0.10 Ha each against Rs. 45,000/- allotted and expenditure made accordingly.
- Supply of Fish Seed : Under this scheme fish seed on free of cost provided to the existing fish pond under category of Group A ,B and C are renovated by self help basis. During 2002-03 315 Nos. of fish farmers are distributed fish seed to their ponds.
Paddy cum-Fish Culture : Under this scheme fish farmers able to harvest double crops at a same time from a same plot of paddy fields. For this the farmers have nothing to invest etc. Because Govt. assistant to the farmer 50% for purchasing of fish seed and preparing paddy plots during the last financial years 10.0 Ha. of existing paddy plots Rs.10,000/- has been expenditure to execute the above scheme for the year 2002-2003.
